Five most popular London commuter towns

22 January 2018

With the cost of property in London having risen sharply in recent years, purchasing a home outside of the capital and commuting to work in the city each day, is the only viable option for many. In fact, according to new research by Lloyds Bank, living an hour outside of London could slice a staggering half a million pounds off buying a property in zones one and two of the capital.

So where are the most popular commuter towns, those working in the city are choosing to make their home? Take a look at five of the most popular London commuter towns.

Wellingborough, Northamptonshire

The Lloyds Bank survey found that Wellingborough in Northamptonshire is the most affordable commuter town. In Wellingborough the average house price is just £197,742 and is a 60-minute commute to the capital, making it a realistic place to live for first-time buyers and those with smaller budgets.

Kettering, Northamptonshire

With the average cost of a home being £206,873 and with a train commute taking an hour, Kettering, also in Northamptonshire, was found to be the second most affordable commuter town to London.

Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Kettering was closely followed by the town of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, where the average house price is just £207,458 and the commute to the capital takes an hour.

Swankley, Kent

Earlier this year, Swankley in Kent was hailed as the best town commuter town to move to. At the time, research conducted by TotallyMoney.com, found the average house price in Swankley was £353,843 and the commute to London is just 29 minutes.

Bushey, Hertfordshire

The same research found Bushey in Hertfordshire to be the second-best commuter area from London, where, at the time, average house prices were £318,484. The commute to the capital from Bushey is just 21 minutes, making it a desirable place for workers in the city who don’t want a lengthy commute to buy property and reside.

In fact, according to TotallyMoney.com’s research, the county of Hertfordshire is home to the most commuter hotspots, with six overall.
