Why buy-to-let remains attractive to investors

19 September 2021

Despite being hit by several tax raids in recent years, investing in property remains attractive.

One of the principal reasons for investing in property to let out is the fact there is strong rental demand across the UK. This is coupled with a consistent rise in the value of property, making investing in bricks and mortar a shrewd move.

Buy-to-let mortgage choice surpasses pre-pandemic level

Another reason why the sector remains attractive to investors is due to the increasing number of exclusive buy-to-let mortgage deals available.

Recent data issued by Moneyfacts.co.uk, shows that the availability of buy-to-let mortgages has increased to a 14-year high. This puts the number of mortgages for landlords beyond the level found in March 2020, before the pandemic began to impact the market.

According to Moneyfacts.co.uk, at the beginning of September 2021, there were 71 more buy-to-let mortgages available than there was in March 2020.

Eleanor Williams, finance expert at Moneyfacts.co.uk, commented on the findings and the resilience of the industry: “As we pass the 25th anniversary of the first buy-to-let mortgages as we know them, our data gives landlords cause for positivity, as the number of products for them to choose from has risen by 153 this month, and at 2,968 is 1,162 higher than this time last year (1,806 Sep 2020).

“The resilience of this sector in the aftermath of a challenging 18-months is clear as choice now exceeds the number of deals available before the pandemic in March 2020 by 71 options.

“Further cause for celebration is that the interest charged on buy-to-let mortgages is falling,” said Williams.

The UK is generally considered a “safe haven” for property investors. The market is also extremely fluid, meaning that extracting capital in and out of property investments is relatively straightforward compared to other international markets.
