Auction House London’s Area Guide to Hounslow

Auction House London has a number of interesting properties listed for auction throughout the City and surrounding areas. Our property auction experts are knowledgeable about the different areas of London, such as Hounslow, and are sharing a series of London area guides to help investors make more informed decisions.

This latest addition to the Auction House London series focuses on Hounslow within the London Borough of Hounslow and is one of the London Plan’s 14 metropolitan centres in Greater London. Hounslow is quite a large residential area, so there are often interesting opportunities for investors searching for residential or mixed-use investments.

    Where is Hounslow?

Hounslow is located in the west of Greater London, nearly 11 miles west-southwest of Charing Cross. It is bordered by Southall to the north, Isleworth to the east, Twickenham to the south, and Feltham to the west. Hounslow is notably near Heathrow Airport, which is in the neighbouring London Borough of Hillingdon.

Hounslow features three London Underground stations in the form of Hounslow East, Hounslow Central and Hounslow West, all served by the Piccadilly line. There is also Hounslow railway station with services operated by South Western Railway running through Hounslow from London Waterloo to Reading. Bus services include a night bus that passes through Hounslow on its way from Heathrow Airport to central London.

    The history of Hounslow

The name Hounslow originates as an Anglo-Saxon phrase which identified the area as a barrow named after a man with the nickname of ‘the Hound’, though nothing else is known about him or how he acquired the nickname.

Hounslow originally developed as a small village surrounding the Holy Trinity Priory that was founded in the early part of the 13th century. Markets soon arrived as well as other facilities for people travelling into and out of London. A nearby railway construction in the 19th century saw a lot more development around the area, while several new roads built during the 20th century made Hounslow a more attractive prospect for industrial development. While industry there prospered for many years, the industrial buildings began being converted into offices, hotels and residential properties from the 1970s onwards.

What does the architecture and property market look like in Hounslow?

The industrial origins of many of the buildings mean there are many interesting and unique properties throughout the area, including several country houses including the stately Osterley House and the glorious Syon House. There are also plenty of recent and more affordable constructions that can be found all over as well.

There are opportunities to buy in Hounslow right now, such as this Vacant First Floor Two Bedroom Flat, situated within a mixed use building over three floors, presenting a practical investment opportunity. Also available is this Three Bedroom Mid Terrace House located on Lampton Road, offering generous space and strong local connections.

What are the amenities like in Hounslow?

Hounslow has all of the amenities you’d expect in a highly residential area, including supermarkets and other grocery shopping options. The town centre is a very busy retail area, with all tube high street shops and other commercial ventures.

There is also a new retail area in development which will include a lot of new shops, bars and restaurants, as well as a cinema multiplex.

    Open spaces in Hounslow

The main open space is Hounslow Heath, which is a local nature reserve covering 200 acres. The area has historical significance as many Bronze Age items such as spearheads and axes have been discovered on the Heath, some of which are currently held at the British Museum.

Bell Square serves as an outdoor performance space, where the local community comes together to enjoy various cultural events in the open air, such as world-renowned theatre acts and dance troupes.

What are the schools like in Hounslow?

It’s no surprise that Hounslow and the surrounding areas are home to many primary and secondary schools, given the high population of the borough. Primary schools include Beavers Community Primary School, Hounslow Heath Junior School and the William Hogarth Primary School.

Secondary schools include St Mark’s Catholic School and Lampton School, as well the Heathland School and Kingsley Academy, the latter of which also has a sixth form. Special schools include the Lindon Bennett School and the Rise Free School.
