Where is Leytonstone?

Leytonstone is located 7 miles north-east of Charing Cross, and lies between Stratford to the south, Leyton to the west, Wanstead to the east and Walthamstow to the north. Leytonstone station is served by the Central line, providing direct access to Stratford, the City and the West End, as well as Leyton Midland Road station that has London Overground services. The history of Leytonstone

Leytonstone was originally a small settlement within the historic county of Essex, with its name believed to derive from a Roman milestone, known as the ‘Leyton Stone’, which still survives near the parish church today.

The area remained a rural village surrounded by farmland until significant development began during the Victorian era as the railway network expanded. New housing was built to accommodate commuters, transforming the area into an established suburb by the early 20th century, something that would have been witnessed by film director Alfred Hitchcock, who was born in Leytonstone in 1899.

What does the architecture and property market look like in Leytonstone?

Leytonstone has a pretty varied housing stock due to its long history of development. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces make up much of the residential landscape, plus there’s a fair bit of interwar housing, modern apartment developments and converted period properties that add some extra variety. One of Leytonstone’s biggest attractions is its access to green space. Wanstead Flats forms part of the much larger Epping Forest and provides wide open grassland that is popular for walking, running and outdoor recreation. Meanwhile, nearby Hollow Ponds offers boating, woodland walks and wildlife habitats, making it one of east London’s most popular outdoor destinations.

Several smaller parks, recreation grounds and sports facilities are also located throughout the area, giving residents plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities close to home.

Leytonstone offers a strong selection of schools, making it a popular choice for families. Primary schools in the area include Davies Lane Primary School and George Tomlinson Primary School, both of which are well regarded within the local community.

Secondary education is available through a variety of schools such as Leytonstone School and Buxton School, plus there are a number of sixth form colleges and further education providers which can be found across Waltham Forest and neighbouring boroughs.
