Auction House London’s Area Guide to Camden

Auction House London has a number of interesting properties listed for auction throughout the City and surrounding areas. Our property auction experts are knowledgeable about the different areas in and around London, such as Camden, and are sharing a series of London area guides to help investors make more informed decisions.

This latest addition to the Auction House London series focuses on the London Borough of Camden, including the famous Camden Town, in the northern part of Inner London. It is one of the capital’s major centres so there are often plenty of opportunities for investors.

    Where is Camden?

Camden is in north central London, almost a mile and a half north of Charing Cross. It’s very close to King’s Cross, Islington and Regent’s Park, with other neighbouring districts including Kentish Town to the north, Bloomsbury to the south, Primrose Hill and Chalk Farm to the west, and St Pancras to the east.

Transport links are excellent in these parts, with the often busy Camden Town and Mornington Crescent London Underground stations on the Northern Line, and major transport hubs Euston and King’s Cross St Pancras nearby. There are a lot of bus routes running throughout the area, plus there are loads of cycle lanes and canal towpaths as well.

    The history of Camden

The area that became modern Camden was originally farmland and small hamlets until London expanded north in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Industrial development followed the construction of canals and railways, along with workshops and building yards.

Industry declined in the twentieth century, and the old railway lands and industrial buildings had to find new uses, which is when Camden became a centre for alternative culture, creative industries, markets and live music.

What does the architecture and property market look like in Camden?

Camden’s residential streets feature Georgian terraces, Victorian townhouses, Edwardian mansion blocks and twentieth century estates. Converted warehouses and loft apartments can be found around old canalside buildings, while new build schemes have been developed in the surrounding areas.

Available properties in Camden include a first-floor studio flat situated within an end-of-terrace building. Also in north London is this three-bedroom semi-detached house in Cricklewood with development potential. And in Park Royal, this modern first-floor two-bedroom flat.

What are the amenities like in Camden?

Camden is known for its lively retail, market and cultural scene. Camden Market is one of London’s most visited destinations, with stalls, food traders, independent shops and music venues clustered around the Lock. Camden High Street offers plenty of supermarkets, cafes, pubs and restaurants, which tend to attract a great many visitors throughout the year.

A variety of gyms, leisure centres and libraries also serve the local population. The area is also home to a number of performance venues, art spaces and community halls, reflecting a long tradition of creativity and live entertainment.

    Open spaces in Camden

Despite its central location and dense development, Camden has access to some of London’s most attractive green spaces. Regent’s Park sits on the western edge of the borough, and features formal gardens, sports pitches, boating lakes and open lawns. Primrose Hill provides panoramic views and a peaceful setting close to Camden Town.

To the north, the lovely Hampstead Heath stretches across woods, meadows, ponds and hills. There are swimming ponds, nature trails and large open areas for walking or running. Smaller parks, recreation grounds and playgrounds are also scattered across the borough, giving residents green space within walking distance of most residential streets.

What are the schools like in Camden?

Camden contains a broad mix of state, faith and independent schools for all ages. Primary schools across the borough, including Beckford Primary School, Argyle Primary School, and the Eleanor Palmer Primary School. Secondary schools and sixth form colleges provide a range of older academic options, including Maria Fidelis Catholic School, Haverstock School, and Camden School for Girls.

The area is also home to significant higher education institutions, including University College London, the School of Oriental and African Studies and other colleges of the University of London in Bloomsbury. Specialist institutions such as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art contribute to the borough’s strong educational identity.
